10 Myths of Botox

When Botox was first approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002, everybody associated it with the frozen, expressionless faces you see on cheap reality TV. A lot has changed since then, but some people still can’t get past the botched jobs they see on some celebrities. So we’re here to bust the most common myths about getting Botox.

Myth #1: Getting Botox will freeze your face.

Fact: Nope. Botox actually relaxes muscle movement, which smooths wrinkles. Sure, Botox technically can “freeze” faces, it’s typically because it wasn’t administered properly or is done way too much.

Myth #2: Botox is only used to make people look pretty.

Fact: Believe it or not, Botox was originally approved by the FDA to treat eye twitches and was only later used for cosmetic purposes. Though most people associate Botox with vanishing wrinkles and plump, Kardashian-style lips, it can also be used to treat migraines, sweaty palms and armpit sweat (Kelly Ripa is a fan!).

Myth #3: Botox is toxic and therefore harmful.

Fact: Botox is perfectly safe and has been FDA approved for almost 20 years. On its own, the Botulinum toxin can cause paralysis, but Botox is a purified version, which makes it nontoxic. So unless you’re getting 200-300 times the recommended dose, you’re fine.

Myth #4: Botox is addictive.

Fact: It’s not possible to become addicted to or dependent on Botox, but we bet you’ll love the results and will be eager for more! And just know that if you stop using Botox, your wrinkles will start to reappear after a while - but they won’t get worse.

Myth #5: Getting Botox injections hurts.

Fact: Meh, what’s a little pinprick in the name of beauty? Certified professionals who know what they’re doing will make sure your experience is a positive one, with no pain, bruising or skin discoloration.

Myth #6: Botox is only for people trying to maintain their beauty.

Fact: Botox is for everyone! Younger people usually use Botox to reduce the need for future treatments, while those of a certain age (ahem) opt in to maintain a youthful appearance.

Myth #7: The results of Botox are immediate.

Fact: You’ll usually see the effects of Botox 3-5 days after your first treatment; it’ll be more pronounced after 7-10 days. Some people need more than one treatment to see the desired results; it totally depends on the person.

Myth #8: Botox is permanent.

Fact: Unfortunately, there is no permanent treatment for fine lines and wrinkles (boo). Botox is temporary and lasts anywhere from 3-6 months, depending on the person. After a while, you’ll start to see its effects wear off.

Myth #9: Once you get plastic surgery, Botox is no longer needed.

Fact: Though plastic surgery can work wonders, it won’t stop the aging process. You’re still prone to developing fine lines and wrinkles from repetitive movement like squinting and smiling, which is where Botox comes in.

Myth #10: Anyone can administer Botox injections.

Fact: Noooo. No, no, no. Though Botox is safe, it’s still a medical procedure and must be administered by a qualified, experienced and certified professional. (Do not let your best friend’s boyfriend’s stepbrother’s girlfriend try her skills on you!) Sweet Tox owner and founder Katie Sweetman is a registered nurse with experience in intensive care and plastic surgery. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in nursing to become a nurse practitioner, so she knows what she’s doing.

Though there are always bound to be misconceptions about Botox, it’s one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in the U.S. and is perfectly safe. At Sweet Tox, we’re here to help you feel comfortable and find the treatment that’s best for you, whether it’s kissable lips or smooth, radiant skin. And we’d love to get to know you better!
