Summer Skin Do's and Don'ts: A Nurse Injector's Guide to Healthy Skin in Wisconsin

Written by Jamie Becker, Nurse Injector

I love injectables. They're my jam! But I'm just as passionate about helping my patients achieve healthy skin.

Whether you're investing in injectables, medical-grade skincare, or both, protecting your skin is one of the best ways to maintain your results. Summer brings longer days, more sun exposure, vacations, lake days, weddings, and busy schedules all of which can make it easy to put your skincare routine on the back burner.

The good news is that you don't have to choose between enjoying your summer and taking care of your skin. With a few simple habits, you can protect your investment, keep your skin healthy, and enjoy everything a Wisconsin summer has to offer!

Here are some of my favorite summer skincare do's and don'ts to help keep your skin healthy, glowing, and protected all season long.

DO: Wear Sunscreen Every Day

Daily SPF is one of the most important steps you can take for healthy, youthful-looking skin. The sun feels amazing, especially after a long Wisconsin winter, but UV rays can damage your skin over time and contribute to premature aging, discoloration, and changes in skin texture. Whether it's sunny, cloudy, or you're simply driving to work, your skin is still being exposed to UV rays. If you're spending time outdoors, reapply sunscreen throughout the day for added protection.

Some of my favorite medical-grade sunscreens are from Colorescience because they provide excellent protection while feeling lightweight and comfortable on the skin.

DON'T: Forget Your Neck, Chest, and Hands

Many people faithfully apply skincare to their face but stop there. Let’s end that trend now! Your neck, chest, and hands receive just as much sun exposure and are often the first areas to show signs of aging. When applying your skincare products and sunscreen, think beyond your face, and try to later your entire exposed body.

DO: Stay Hydrated

Healthy skin starts from the inside out. Proper hydration supports your skin barrier, helps maintain healthy-looking skin, and benefits your overall wellness. While drinking water isn't a substitute for a good skincare routine, it's an important part of keeping your skin functioning at its best. You know those expensive water bottles we all tote around? Time to start using them 🤣

DON'T: Skip Your Skincare Routine

Summer schedules fill up quickly with vacations, lake days, weddings, camping trips, and late nights. Even if you simplify your routine while traveling, try not to skip it altogether. Remember, consistency always delivers better results than perfection!

DO: Add Extra Sun Protection

Sunscreen is only one part of protecting your skin. Wide-brim hats, sunglasses, UPF clothing, seeking shade, and even driving gloves can all help reduce unnecessary UV exposure.

At Sweet Tox, we also recommend Sundone as an additional layer of protection. It is designed to support your skin’s natural repair processes, help protect against the effects of UV exposure, and promote a brighter, healthier-looking complexion.

Think of it as another tool in your summer skincare routine, rather than a replacement for sunscreen.

DON'T: Put Off Aesthetic Treatments During the Summer

Summer is a busy season, but your skincare and aesthetic treatments don’t have to go on hold. While some treatments, such as certain lasers, may be better suited for the cooler months, many aesthetic treatments can still be performed safely during the summer with proper planning and sun protection.

Some summer-friendly treatments include:

Want to dive in but not sure what would be best for you? We’d love to have you in for a consultation! It’s the best way to determine which treatments are appropriate for your skin, your goals, and your lifestyle.

DO: Think Long-Term

Our best results don't come from one treatment or one product. Beautiful, healthy skin is created through a combination of treatments, consistent skincare, and healthy habits. Every patient's skin is different, which is why a personalized treatment plan focused on your goals is so important.

Small habits, practiced consistently, create beautiful skin over time.

Final Thoughts

Summer in Wisconsin is too short not to enjoy, so spend time outside! Go to the lake. Watch the sunsets. Make memories. Just remember to protect your skin! ☺️ ❤️
