Why We Start Low with Tox (Even Though More Units Means Longer Results)
Written by Marissa Taugher, Registered Nurse Injector
"How long will this last?"
It's the question we hear most! Here it is: dose and duration are connected. More units generally means longer-lasting results, but we still start low on purpose. Let us explain why that isn't a contradiction here at Sweet Tox!
The short answer is that most people see their tox results last three to four months. You'll notice softening around day three to five, with full results settling in at about two weeks. But "three to four months" is an average, and averages hide a lot. Your neighbor who swears hers lasts six months and your friend who feels like his fades at ten weeks may actually both be telling the truth!
Dosing is what actually drives duration. This is the big one. Neuromodulators work by temporarily blocking the nerve signal that tells a muscle to contract. More product means a more complete block, and it takes your body longer to clear it and regenerate those connections. Underdose a strong muscle and you'll feel it wearing off early.
So what actually determines how long your results last? A few things!
Muscle strength is a big one: a heavy, well-developed frown muscle needs more product than a delicate crow's feet area, and strong muscles just bounce back faster.
How expressive you are matters too. If your face is doing a lot of work all day (and some of us are just built that way!), you may metabolize your results faster.
Your metabolism and activity level play a role as well, since very active people sometimes find their results fade a touch sooner.
And treatment history counts for a lot. First timers often get a slightly shorter run, but with consistent treatment, muscles soften over time from reduced use, so many clients find their results start stretching further the longer they've been coming in.
So if duration were the only goal, the answer would be simple: just use more.
Why we don't just use more ⬇️
Here's the thing though, duration isn't the only goal. Looking like yourself is.
Tox isn't a volume game at Sweet Tox, it's a map. Every face has its own pattern of pull and tension, and the artistry is in reading that pattern: which muscles are overworking, which ones are quietly holding your brow up, and where a little movement should stay so your expressions still read as yours.
Overdose a forehead and you don't just get a smooth forehead. You get heaviness, brows that sit lower than they should, a face that communicates less than it used to. Sure, it lasts longer, but that's not a win when you're four months into a result you didn't want.
We can always add. We can never take away. That single sentence shapes how we dose here at Sweet Tox. Starting conservative means your worst case outcome is "I'd like a little more," which we can fix in ten minutes. Starting aggressive means your worst case outcome is waiting three months for something to wear off. We'd rather you leave underdone and come back than leave overdone and have to wait it out.
We’re so adamant on the two-week check in because this is where the low dose approach really pays off. Come back at two weeks with us and your results are fully settled by then, so we can see exactly how your muscles responded. If an area needs a touch more, we add it! If everything landed beautifully, we just make notes and send you on your way. That visit isn't a correction, but rather it's the second half of the treatment.
Your first appointment at Sweet Tox is really a conversation between your face and the product. We're learning your patterns, your muscle strength, your rate of metabolism, so that first round may land closer to three months than four, and that's totally expected. By your second and third rounds, we know your map. We know which areas hold and which fade early, so we can dose each one accordingly. This is usually when patients start telling us their results feel longer and more consistent, because they are! Longevity, done well, is something you build. Not something you buy in one appointment.
The bottom line: could we give you more units and stretch your results a few extra weeks? Sure. Would that be the right call for your face? Usually not on day one. We'd rather earn your longevity honestly: start soft, assess at two weeks, refine over time, and end up with a result that lasts and actually looks like you ☺️
